SERDANG, June 27 – A noble initiative to familiarize children with healthcare was successfully realized through the Teddy Bear Clinic program at the Family Medicine Specialist Clinic, Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (HSAAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on June 27.
This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program was organized by the HSAAS Family Medicine Specialist Clinic Department in strategic collaboration with the Dental Health Division, UPM University Health Centre (PKU). It successfully attracted the participation of 67 children aged between 2 to 12 years old, who attended with their respective parents.
Five Interactive Stations for Fun Learning
Aimed at providing early exposure to healthy lifestyles and healthcare, the Teddy Bear Clinic utilized an interactive and child-friendly approach to dispel participants' fears of clinical treatment environments.
To achieve this objective, participants had the opportunity to visit five learning stations consisting of consultation, vaccination, dental health, healthy diet, and recreation.
Giant Tooth Replica Attracts Participants' Attention
Among the most eye-catching stations was the dental health station managed by the Dental Health Division, PKU UPM. The team, comprising two Dental Officers, one Dental Surgery Assistant, and one Dental Care Assistant, was responsible for conducting dental check-ups and Oral Hygiene Education (OHE) sessions at two designated stations.
Interestingly, the OHE station featured a giant-sized tooth replica creatively made from recycled materials. After being exposed to the correct brushing techniques and the proper use of dental floss by the officers on duty, the children were given the opportunity to interact directly with the tooth model to try out the techniques they had learned.
This session was also enlivened by a dental health quiz aimed at stimulating their minds and encouraging two-way learning.
Continuous Commitment to Dental Health
Overall, the Teddy Bear Clinic received a very encouraging response from the participants and parents.
The success of this collaboration serves as a benchmark that the Dental Health Division, PKU UPM is always committed and ready to welcome cooperation from any party. This effort is in line with the goal of delivering the best, high-quality dental healthcare services and health promotion to the community, starting from a young age.
