What is dental filling/ dental restoration?

A dental restoration or dental filling is a treatment to restore a tooth damaged by decay by closing off spaces where bacteria can enter with filling material.

Materials used for fillings include a composite resin (tooth-coloured filling) and an amalgam. The filling material used will depend on the suitability of treatment.

AMALGAM (SILVER) FILLINGS

  • Are resistant to wear, very strong can withstand chewing forces and long-lasting at least 10 to 15 years.
  • However, due to their dark color, they are more noticeable composite restorations and are not usually used in very visible areas, such as front teeth.
  • According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the level of mercury in the filling is safe for people over the age of six.

COMPOSITE RESINS

  • Are matched to be the same color of teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is desired.
  • Composites may not be the ideal material for large fillings as they may chip or wear over time. They can also become stained from coffee, tea or tobacco, and do not last as long as other types of fillings generally from three to 10 years.

Why dental filling is important?

  • Reduce sensitivity and pain.
  • Prevent the spread of decay
  • Restore the strength of tooth
  • Avoid infection

When a dental filling is needed?

  • Experience tooth sensitivity when a certain tooth is exposed to hot or cold temperature or sweet and sour food
  • Throbbing or sharp tooth pain
  • Tooth pain when bite down on or chew food
  • Able to feel the hole with tongue or can see a hole or dark spot on tooth
  • Food always get stuck on or between certain teeth
  • Notice that an existing tooth filling is cracked or broken
